The Best Ketchup

20121023-ketchup-tasting-primary

Ketchup is a tomato sauce with spices and vinegar but sometimes it seems that some ketchup brands forget a couple ingredients.  There are many varieties of ketchup brands that you can buy and they all taste different, but there is only one that is the best (in my opinion).

There is no name, Hunts, Great Value, French’s, organic, primo, the list could go on forever… But my all time favourite (so far) has to be Heinz.  The other ketchups are either too sweet, not sweet enough, or are just too thick.

Hunts and Great Value are basically just tomato sauce.  They taste like they need more vinegar and sugar and are WAY too thick.  While no name is too sweet and watery. no name could use more spice and vinegar.

The king of ketchup that makes it perfectly is Heinz.  It has the perfect texture, just enough sugar, and all the right spices.  Heinz is the god of all ketchup!

“I Put That Sh*t on Everything”

My last post was about how I discovered that putting ketchup on food that I don’t like makes it bearable for me to eat.  I don’t only put ketchup on the food I dislike to make it taste better but also the food I already love.

I love my potatoes and I love them cooked many different ways.  french fries, hash browns, shredded, patties, mashed, roasted, and baked.  Sure I can eat potatoes plain but why would I when they are a perfect carrier for ketchup.  You may be thinking that ketchup belongs on some of these but not all.  Like mashed?  Yes mashed!  This is something I discovered about 2 weeks ago.  My family loves mashed potatoes…. me, not so much.  their good and I’ll eat them but they are kind of bland.  So when I heard that we were having mashed potatoes again with dinner I got to thinking.  mashed potatoes are just potatoes, and what goes well with potatoes?  Ketchup!  Now I can’t go back.  When when the mashed potatoes hit the table so does the bottle of ketchup.

Another Family favourite is deep fried halibut.  And I think you all can guess what I love on my fish… Ketchup!  People alwayslook at me weird but hey.  I have no clue where I got this combo from but i’ve been eating my deep fried halibut like this since I can remember.

Sauerkraut.  Not something everyone likes.  My dad has been going through a little sauerkraut phase and he now puts it on everything and has even started making his own.  So last week I was making lunch and I decided to put some sauerkraut into the grilled cheese sandwiches.  But before I did that I needed to make sure that it would taste good with ketchup (because who doesn’t eat their grilled cheese with ketchup?).  I took a fork full of sauerkraut and squirted some ketchup on and voila, a new recipe was born.  The ketchup calmed the sour taste and added some sweet to create a taste that I can’t describe.  So sauerkraut grilled cheese dipped in ketchup is a thing in our house now.

Ketchup is not only to cover up offal tastes but also to enhance already great tastes.

Yuck to Yum

Ketchup on Spaghetti
Ketchup on Spaghetti

For some reason my body decided that I wasn’t meant to enjoy rich food.  I can’t eat mac and cheese, eggs (cooked in certain ways), large average amounts of chocolate, cheese in general and for whatever reason spaghetti.  The list goes on and on.  After a couple bites I just can’t eat it anymore!  But with a little magic I can turn yuck to yum.

Let me paint you a picture.  Your at a sleepover with a couple of friends and your mom isn’t coming to pick you up till 4 o’clock so that means Karens mom is feeding you lunch.  Three girls and one busy mom means Karens actually in charge of lunch… What can she make?  Mac and Cheese.  Sounds good but nay nay.  Mac and Cheese is usually on the favorite list for kids but not for me.  Homemade, Kraft, no name, none of it works for me.  I can barely make it through half a bowl.

Eggs.  I can eat a small omelette or a hard boiled egg with a ton of salt, or even eggs benny and enjoy them.  Sunny side up, over easy, dead, scrambled, or poached eggs are a huge nay nay.  They do not sit well with me.  Unfortunately these style eggs are common breakfast food especially when going over to the grandparents for breakfast.

Spaghetti is another kid favorite and that’s what it used to be for me but now I can hardly eat it.  I have no idea what happend there but I no longer enjoy it.  It might be the pasta or the tomato sauce or the combination of both, there’s just something about it.  It’s become a nay nay.

Now I’ll let you in on the most magical experience of my life.  These food that I can’t eat. A bowl of Mac and Cheese, fried eggs, poached eggs, and spaghetti are edible with KETCHUP.  Squirt some ketchup on and I can eat a whole bowl of Mac and Cheese and only start feeling green by the last couple bites.  I can make it through that egg with breakfast with ketchup on the side.  Now your probably thinking there’s no way she actually dump a bottle of ketchup on spaghetti and ate it!  Yes and no.  In Norway that’s what spaghetti is.  Pasta boiled and then thrown into a pot with cooked ground beef and you get to add your own ketchup.  So on my vacation this was served to me and it was actually pretty good.

Now about the chocolate and cheese.  I haven’t tried putting ketchup on them but if you feel inspired then give it a try and tell me about it by contacting me through my contacts page!
